I replaced Wicd with the default network manager again and now switching 
between networks (including eth0 -> wlan0) is possible without any 
freeze&reboot again. 
Seems like that was the combination which originally caused what I assume was a 
kernel panic.

Originally I had made the switch to Wicd because network manager never
stored the WPA2 passphrase but that seems to have been fixed since then.

Sorry for the inconvenience but maybe this will help somebody else in
the future.
