I replaced Wicd with the default network manager again and now switching between networks (including eth0 -> wlan0) is possible without any freeze&reboot again. Seems like that was the combination which originally caused what I assume was a kernel panic.
Originally I had made the switch to Wicd because network manager never stored the WPA2 passphrase but that seems to have been fixed since then.
