Public bug reported: Binary package hint: initramfs-tools
I'm not sure if I picked the right package, because (even in recovery mode) there is so little output while the system is booting. After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 beta1, my system did not boot anymore. Picking single mode or the older kernel did not help. There was a message about a filesystem that could not be mounted because the mountpoint did not exist. As it turns out, the old line "none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=127,devmode=664 0 0" (once added for VirtualBox non-ose) was causing the entire boot process to fail. Booting from a USB stick and commenting this line by adding a # in front solved the immediate issue. However, I think that this is a fundamental flaw in the design of the boot process. An issue like this should be ignored instead of treated as a fatal error.
