Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. I believe
this is fixed in the most recent version of empathy. Please try
installing empathy from the telepathy PPA at
https://edge.launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=karmic
and verify that it is.
