The problem resolved itself after I removed the following line from /etc/apt/source.list.
deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main After removing it I restarted the PC and asked update manager to check for updates. Then it said there are only 69 updates vs. orignal 73. All of them looked like language packs. I asked it to install it and it did it successfully. So your analysis is right that other repositories are messing up the normal update.
