The problem resolved itself after I removed the following line from
/etc/apt/source.list.

deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main

After removing it I restarted the PC and asked update manager to check
for updates. Then it said there are only 69 updates vs. orignal 73. All
of them looked like language packs. I asked it to install it and it did
it successfully.

So your analysis is right that other repositories are messing up the
normal update. Thanks for your suggestion. You can close this bug if you
wish.
