Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

The short info:

Ubuntu release: 9.10
gvfs-backend version: 1.4.1-0ubuntu1
expected behaviour: copy as fast as if mounting via mount.cifs and copying to
that mounted location
experienced behaviour: copying via gvfs was significantly slower (at best,
around 40% the speed I could achieve via a mount.cifs call and copying into the
mounted tree).

The ramble:

This looks a bit like #186461 but I hesitate to post there since that
bug was reported (and supposedly fixed) about 2 years ago, on a very
much older version of gvfs.

However, the numbers don't lie:

I have a wireless network at home which isn't the fastest in the world
considering that I have a lot of concrete between nodes. I recently got
a media player which has NAS functionality and had to wait approximately
72 hours for 160 gig to be copied down to it at the amazing rate of
about 500-700 KiB/s. I thought it was just my slow network until I tried
mounting the remote share into my local filesystem and copying that way
(through nautilus as well) -- for other reasons I wanted a permanent
mount instead of just using gvfs -- and found that I could consistently
copy at about 1.8MiB/s !

The only explanation I could have for this is a lot of small network
calls that gvfs is making which are latent -- hence sucking more over my
not-too-fantastic wlan.
