I now completely removed xserver, gdm, gnome and kde, cleaned apt cache and removed /etc/X11 and /etc/gdm as well as /usr/share/X11 and /usr/share/gdm. After reinstalling those packages, I'm still having the same problem - and I'm really near to giving up now as there's just no hint on whats not working out - at least for me. I can see gdm reporting that everything is fine in syslog/daemon.log, but apart from that there's still no error visible no matter where I look :|
