I don't quite understand the first paragraph. Sounds like the reason is that the file is corrupted? This happens only for some pictures, I can not recognize a pattern.
I can now confirm them failing to open in F-Spot though. File corruption seems quite possible here. :( I'll try unflipping, opening them on other computers and repairing them somehow. A shame that I don't look at my RAWs too often.
