I saw exactly the same symptom on my Karmic server during attempts to connect 
to the share from BackupPC. Failed on hourly attempts for 6 hours, then 
recovered and completed backups with no intervention. 
Samba reported:
...

  Can't become connected user!

  Can't become connected user!

[2010/04/06 04:00:02,  0] smbd/service.c:929(make_connection_snum)

  Can't become connected user!
...

BackupPC reported: 
2010-04-06 03:00:05 Got fatal error during xfer (tree connect failed: 
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE)
[same earlier/later]

No other messages on either the samba server or the backup server, that
can correlate in time to this.

If there is a documented meaning to this message, please help identify
it. If the message indicates an internal consistency issue, please
advise on what additional diagnostic actions should be taken.

I see loads of people complaining about this message, but no answers or
solutions...
