Could it be setup so that 'sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools' doesn't pick the x-packages automatically?
Having to run sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends open-vm-tools seems to be a bit of a hack work around. Especially since this package claims to be command-line tools.
