Even without additional animations, a compositor can give you
a) a working back buffer for all windows
b) limited vsync / tearing avoidance for X rendering
c) translucency
which are much more important for a snappy, polished feel anyway. Compositing 
is not only about eyecandy!

I'm glad this is fixed now.
