I can confirm that this bug is still present in Karmic. I can use my
Motorola A1200 as a modem with 'Gnome PPP' without any problems.

After connecting my Motorola A1200 I get this in syslog:

Seems like It has something to do with modem-manager, so I attach the a
debug-log & add modemmanager to the affected packages. Please tell me if
you need more information.
