After this and one other reported OOo-crash+dataloss bug I switched to OpenSUSE 10.2. I just compared the ODT and the PDF by Duncan and they look the same yes (and of course the ODT doesn't crash my OpenOffice).
But (by chance) I just hit another bug in OOo which can be confirmed on KUbuntu Feisty Fawn with OOo 2.2-rc3. I reported this against OpenOffice itself, this is the bug-number: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=75517 Is this related?
