I've had the exact same problem on an acer laptop and a compaq nx7400 laptop. It "seems" to be cosmetic. Both machines boot properly and surprisingly fast, but like others have mentioned the errors displayed are ugly - terminal screen with "Cannot write bytes: Broken Pipe" listed three times and the Ubuntu logo with dots below are not displayed (after the first boot).
