I came across this bug, because running

$ thunderbird

on the command line terminated immediately without showing a window or
any message at all. So I tried to run

$ /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird-bin

directly, producing the mentioned error message. I found this in my home
directory:

osw...@pluto:~$ pwd;ls -ald .*thunderbird*
/home/oswald
lrwxrwxrwx 1 oswald oswald   25 2010-04-18 02:48 .mozilla-thunderbird ->
/home/oswald/.thunderbird
lrwxrwxrwx 1 oswald oswald   25 2010-04-16 23:50 .thunderbird ->
/home/oswald/.thunderbird
drwx------ 3 oswald oswald 4096 2010-04-03 20:38 .thunderbird.upstream

Removing .mozilla-thunderbird and .thunderbird and renaming
.thunderbird.upstream to .thunderbird allowed me to start thunderbird
and access my accounts again.
