I made comments on bug #543371 that I feel pertains to this. I don't think this is a bug per se but rather an attempt to use drives in an unintended manner. If you do not use them as a raid then you have to use dmraid to erase the raid metadata from them. Turning off the raid controller is insufficient to restore the drives to non raid use.
