I am having this issue on a lucid x64 install upgraded from a properly
working karmic. I have another lucid x64 clean install that does not
have the issue.

the only information I have is this in my auth.log. can I enable some extended
login somehow?
Apr 18 16:27:29 cw gnome-screensaver-dialog: pam_unix(gnome-screensaver:auth):
unix_chkpwd abnormal exit: 11
Apr 18 16:27:31 cw gnome-screensaver-dialog: pam_unix(gnome-screensaver:auth):
unix_chkpwd abnormal exit: 11
Apr 18 16:27:31 cw gnome-screensaver-dialog: pam_unix(gnome-screensaver:auth):
authentication failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=:0.0 ruser= rhost=
user=chrisw

there's 2 because i tried 2 times to make sure I didn't typo, then
switched to console and logged in to kill gnome-screensaver. This also
isn't failing intermittently, it fails every time, even when manually
locking the screen.
