Can anyone experiencing this problem provide a dmesg from a failed boot?
There was a problem around the beta 2 timeframe where radeon.modeset=1
was forced by a modprobe conf installed with the -ati package that could
have caused issues but that problem should not exist still. There is no
KMS (or acceleration even) support for R5xxx+ in lucid and the earliest
kernel with even basic support for KMS is 2.6.34. There should be no
need to have the firmware for it unless someone is using a 2.6.34
kernel. Most likely this is an issue with the xserver-xorg-video-ati
package on the affected cards and not the kernel given the lack of KMS
support. Can anyone having the problem try booting with splash removed
from the kernel command line as well?

Anthony Hook: Your problem is different, RS600 does not work with KMS in
lucid at the moment and
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/544590 is the
bug for that issue.
