In my case it happens with messages composed of just 6 characters. I see no correlation between the length of my message and this bug. The other aspect of this is, that after the bug occurs I can't send any messages to that contact, until I log out and in again.
This is really annoying. I've just installed aMSN because of this, but I don't like it.
