For those still suffering black screen on boot with 2.6.32-21, I've
found that adding "nomodeset single" to the grub loader (hold shift on
boot these days to access grub) gives access to a prompt to start in a
safe graphics mode. Also remove "quite splash" from the boot options to
see more diagnostics on progress.

The same prompt also provides an option to reconfigure X, but it appears
to not work.

For anybody having black screen trouble with the installer who may
happen to read this, "nomodeset single" seems to work there too.
