Here are my five cents:

On an IBM Thinkpad R51 - 2887 with:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 02)

and kernel 2.6.32-21 + xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3Ubuntu1
everything works perfectly, including Compiz. No X crahes at all. So, I
pinned xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3Ubuntu1 to avoid that the
"workaround" xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3Ubuntu3 gets installed
and disables DRI.
