Imre and Serge- Thanks... So this must be a disk geometry specific problem. (I actually went to Fry's and bought a new motherboard/cpu after the first few failures, thinking it was flaking out; same thing new cpu/motherboard).
My two disks are 500.1 GB SATA drives.
