I am unable to start either the Ubuntu or Xubuntu LiveCDs (Live mode or install mode) on my Thinkpad X40 with Intel 855GM. The whole machine locks up when starting X, last visible message is about starting cups server.
Following advice in this thread I added to the grub boot parameters: i915.modeset=0 - gives no improvement, X still locks up machine i915.modeset=1 - allows X to start and presents first installer window. For Ubuntu CD this requires careful timing of the 'Esc' key to bring up the grub menu, which normally whizes past. Too late now to run through complete install, but hopefully this might help others who are pulling their hair out. Cheers and Happy Release Day!
