Comment 22 is the solution, but there is also more that is causing the problem.
In the new kernel there is an early version of rt3090sta.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.32.21-generic/drivers/staging/rt3090 2.1.0 i believe. You need to remove this first before updating. Using Ralink driver, the Wifi kill switch no longer works, which is a bummer.
