Conn, thanks for the tip. It works fine for me. Unfortunately I don't know how to assign different drivers for different ATA ports :( I've been poking around but haven't found anything useful. I was also trying to disable pata_ali when compiled in (along with ata_generic) - to no avail :(
Regarding Karmic.
