Forest Thanks for your hint about setting up the system fan with pwmconfig, I've done the same and everything seems to be working as desired now.
I agree however that this shouldn't be something that users should have to configure themselves and if Ubuntu is to take off on laptops and netbooks then out-of-the-box support for hardware is necessary.
