I seem to suffer from the same problem in up-to-date lucid x86_64 with Ubuntu kernel 2.6.32-21-generic. I assume the problem only occurs when the target server is considerable slower than the local machine, like an ultra slow NAS serving for a SSD boosted developer machine.
