I installed and ran Valgrind, and tried to follow your instructions. Rhythmbox 
does not crash, so I just let it run for a while and then closed the program. I 
also started a song and stopped it.
The log grew to 2.5 GB...

I then killed rhythmbox and restarted it, just letting it "idle" over
night. The process explorer showed somewhere about 4GB memory
consumption...

Note that on my old home PC, I was not able to reproduce this behaviour.
Maybe this older machine is 32-bit and the machine where the faulty
behavior can be noticed is 64-bit?
