I just upgraded to 10.04 (and not a fresh install). I've been running for over a day and I don't see these kernel panic messages any more. I also re-installed ubuntu-desktop and log in with GDM just fine. To get by, I had just been logging in with a text terminal an starting X with "startx"... things seem better now.
