The installer does not assume you already have a bootloader installed.
It installs to the MBR of the disk that you're putting Ubuntu on unless
you tell it to do otherwise (in the advanced dialog off the summary
page).

If you are able to reproduce this, can you run the installer in debug
mode (select "Try Ubuntu" then press alt-F2 when the desktop loads and
type `ubiquity -d` in the box that appears)?  When the installation
finishes, hit alt-F2 again and type `apport-collect 575473`.
