i am absolutely sure that the commands i provided are the ones executed,
with no file to open or any other additional parameters than the ones
already mentioned.

It could be that in the default installation there is a script called
mplayer that gets executed when i run "mplayer" and provides extra
parameters to the real executable, which i dont think is the case. Will
check, though, and let you know.
