I was unable to install tex-common using synaptic with the default settings. I was able to get it installed once I added a line to /etc/apt/sources.list as suggested here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/texlive-base/download Unfortunately, texlive-latex-base also seems to not have installed. I was able to get it to work using get-apt.
