Please try the following "sudo aptitude purge scim;sudo aptitude install
scim".  Aptitude may ask you to deinstall a couple of packages alongside
scim.   A couple of packages should be OK.  If it wants to deinstall
half the system, abort.  If it wants to deinstall any packages called
ubuntu* or *desktop or something like that, abort.
