thanks Draycen DeCator i could solve the problem after i installed 'compiz'. @jason i too had problems with grub while upgrading to 'lucid'. i finally installed without choosing any disk or partition for grub to load in and later installed grub by 'sudo apt-get install grub'. it installed in the right partition. maybe you can try that. another thing is - this is only a hench - your firefox seems to be the only program that is not being displayed in incomplete window. just check if you had earlier stored firefox as a start up program from 'system>preferences>start up applications'? if yes or if you dont remember then close all applications and go to 'system>preferences>start up applications', choose 'options' tab and click on 'remember currently running applications' button. then reboot and start firefox and see if this solves the problem. ( of course your 'preference for appearance should be set to normal or higher)
