I've installed again using the alternative cd (no graphics mode) and the
install went okay. I then booted it using the recovery option (from
grub) and chose the "resume" option which gave me a login prompt. I then
used aptitude to remove gdm.

My laptop boots successfully to a login prompt. I can then login and try
to run X using startx which causes the machine to lock up completely
with a blank screen. (There isn't any response from the network - can't
even ping.) I tried setting the various nomodeset and i915.modeset=0
kernel options (in all the combinations) to no avail. I even unloaded
the i915 module and blacklisted it which made no difference.

This leads me to believe that it is not a problem with the i915 kernel
module......

I then created a default xorg.conf (using Xorg -configure) and tried
disabling all the modules, and setting various options again, to no
avail. I'll keep you posted if I find anything.
