I have just upgraded my home constructed desktop to Kubuntu Lucid and appear to have exactly the same problem; no grub2 menu. After around 10-15 seconds, the KDE splash screen appears and login proceeds as normal. My hardware includes an HP w1907s LCD Display running at up to 1400x900 res, driven by a an nVidia graphics card and the devices given in the details below. Everything was fine before the upgrade.
