I'm an experienced user and I found this annoying as well.  Applets
shouldn't disappear like that.  The idea of a do-everything applet is a
bad idea.  What happened to the philosophy of "do one thing, but do it
well"?  Now I have to dink around with Preferences->Startup_Applications
instead of simply adding it to the panel.
