** Description changed:

This problem appeared in Karmic and has become worse on Lucid.

When booting the system from grub the system fails to boot and falls
back to BusyBox with the following error:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: 62ab0616791

  ...

  ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/960ea5ea-1acb-43a5-b594-d62ab0616791 does not
  exist.

The disk partition does exist and the system will boot if the keyboard
keys are pressed or the touchpad is moved (I assume that this is
  generating input events).

If the keys are not pressed then the disk light does not flicker and the
  kernel boot times out.

Holding down a key continuously to get the kernel to boot causes the
touchpad psmouse module to fail to load. Currently the only work around
is to sporadically press keys often enough to get the kernel to boot
  without overloading the input device.
