Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

The indicator applet shows me a speaker icon, which I use all the time
to control audio and see audio state, and an envelope for evolution mail
(which I don't use, I use Thunderbird) and a chat client (which I also
don't use). I can't free valuable panel space by removing the envelope
without removing the volume icon (i.e. removing indicator-applet from
the Panel). So this is a pretty suckful situation where two icons with
very different functionality have been artificially locked together.

I should be able to choose which indicators are shown in the indicator
applet. The only solution (not obvious for a new user) is to go into
Synaptic and remove indicator-messages, which completely nails the
envelope icon.

I think this has been reported before, but it seems like a real bug to
me.
