I have a hard time really understanding all the tests and checks the original postinst does:-( What you propose sounds like a straight and clean solution. I'll probably won't find the time to implement, though... It probably makes sense to forward your thoughts to the Debian BTS, as you said some time ago: Ubuntu doesn't seem to really care about this package...
