Currently i'm on Ubuntu Lucid using xorg-edgers PPA and the 2.6.34-1-generic kernel from that PPA.
I tried your steps, but the crash is still there at the point where the login screen should appear. If I boot normally (without your steps) i can see the Ubuntu logo on the television (not on the monitor) for a second and right after that, the system crashes.
