Thanks Anakin Starkiller for the info... I have since learned enough to realize that I have an intel chipset with integrated graphics so the ATI is actually not applicable to my situation. I was able to workaround this issue by removing/unistalling ACPI, adding acpi_osi="Linux" to the grub menu list, and installing lm_sensors. Fans still dies sometimes when resuming from suspend.
