hi daniel,

if I asked nicely, would you be willing to give me a little more help?

I've followed the discussion about bug 178442, and have tried the
suggestions that seemed to fit my situation, without success:

a) #64 (the "correct" version of #63 where the rules file goes in
/etc/udev/rules.d)
I also changed the subsystem_device parameter to match my model of card like
this ATTRS{subsystem_device}=="0xd638"
I called the rules file ice1712_rules instead of pulseaudio_rules - is this ok?

b) #30  (adding the lines  "slave.format S32_LE" & "slave.channels 10"
to the "ICE1712.pcm.front.0" entry in the
/usr/share/alsa/cards/ICE1712.conf file.

c) #7,#37,#72 adding a line to the /etc/pulse/default.pa file to explicitly
load the module:
load-module module-alsa-sink sink_name=delta_out device=hw:0 channels=10
channel_map=left,right,aux0,aux1,aux2,aux3,aux4,aux5,aux6,aux7
I was unsure of what device name to use - some examples had things like
hw:M2496, but I had no way of knowing what the name should be, so I used an
example from here:
https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-discuss/2008-January/001240.html
where the first soundcard detected can be referred to as hw:0
I used this & disabled/removed all soundcards except the ice-1712 card.

none of the above have worked.

from another suggestion, I've also explicitly re-loaded/re-installed the
ALSA ice-1712 driver.

just in case its useful, here is the output from pulseaudio -vvv:
