Yes. That worked for me. Found this tip on Ubuntu forums and it looks so much better (if not any faster, in fact GRUB2 to desktop is now averaging 1 minute with the occasional long boot due to fscking).
I still would prefer a continuous progress bar. The 5 dots cycle through several times before X starts so they're not an accurate indicator of the boot progress like usplash was. Lastly on logout/shutdown/reboot the blackness remains (with a tiny strip of the Plymouth splash visible at the bottom of the screen.
