I absolutely agree with Sam. It may be a serious problem for (new) users, when the places menu is broken.
We have at least 15 threads calling for help in the german speaking forums (ubutuusers.de). It is also is hard for them to get help, because the behavior of the bug may be different (e.g. opens applications XY which may not even have a GUI). An alternative bugfix could be to force directories to be opened by nautlius.
