I've had this problem and was about it left me thinking one of these things : Either Ubuntu is bugged, or my sound card is bad. Also thought that my speakers were bad cause the sound had bad quality.
FIXED THE PROBLEM by manually adjusting setting pins on the sound card (yes on the hardware itself).
