I have finally been able to get a booting system. The reason why X-windows did not start up was that the generic vesa driver did not work. (I was forced to use the vesa driver in the Karmic distribution, because the default radeon driver regularly froze.)
When I switched to the default radeon video card driver, then I got the X-windows up and running.
