Yes, I just confirmed your theory using debian squeeze client across openvpn to debian squeeze samba server.
Result: 1) Using smbmount //server/share /home/ian/shared -o uid=ian,gid=users,user,credentials=/home/ian/.samba_creds,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix spurious files are created as explained above 2) Using sudo smbmount //smurver/intranet /home/ferry/.smb4k -o uid=ferry,gid=exalon,user,dir_mode=0775,filemode=0775,nounix,nobrl (adding the nobrl option) NO spurious files are created. For the record, smb4k appears to be broken both in debian and ubuntu, but in different ways, so I reverted to smbclient for this test.
