Ok, I removed all of Ubuntu's OpenOffice.org packages, and installed straight from the OpenOffice.org web site, and my problem is gone. Sooo, therefore this seems to be a problem with the way that Ubuntu packaged OO.o. I can now open my large 4+mb file in just a few seconds like I should be able too. :) I know this isn't a fix, but it works fine for me. Also it proves (I had my doubts) that this is an Ubuntu package problem.
Hope someone can make some sense of this, even though perhaps I may have been one of very few people actually affected by this bug.
