No such luck when I updated U10.04 my Dell Dimension 9150, but then a key difference is that my crackling noises are on an external amplifier which is NOT shut down when the PC turns itself off. Since the same HW with WXP does not exhibit the noise, I am still hoping to find there is some sort of 'turn off' that can be sent from Ubuntu to the sound card just before power off. Simply choosing mute on the speaker icon doesn't do it!
