Public bug reported:

I have a hard drive in a system that failed. It was attached with
mdraid, and after it died I removed it from the RAID set, ran some SMART
tests, and left the drive in place until a replacement arrived. At some
point, the system completely locked up, and I'm guessing that's related
to it (though I don't know for sure). If it is, it seems to me that this
is exactly the situation that RAID is supposed to prevent, and the
kernel should handle it well enough to not completely panic when the
drive stops responding properly.
